BREAKOUT I:
Purpose-Built: Design Principles to Guide Philanthropic Projects that Shape a More Ethical, Equitable and Just-Built World

Capital projects can be fundamental to grantees success and they can be a distraction from their program focus and core competency.  Whether engineering physical structures or designing grantmaking strategies, understanding the power of “purpose built” design is crucial to ensuring the final product is not only functional, but is impact-driven, and meets grantmakers’ and grantees’ missions. By understanding how the design process for physical spaces can go beyond aesthetics, engage beneficiaries’ and communities’ needs, and inform how to approach problems, funders and grantees alike can tap each new project as an opportunity to create sustainable change for their organizations and for the constituencies they serve. What insights from designing, building, and advocating for better buildings can be applied to foundation strategies and programs?
