Director of Research and Evaluation, The Wallace Foundation
Edward Pauly has been director of research and evaluation for The Wallace Foundation since 1996. He leads the Foundation’s work filling important knowledge gaps for field leaders and policymakers — mapping innovative solutions to major social problems and providing useful evidence on what works, why, and how. His team’s evidence-building projects include major reports on the effects of innovative programs; operational lessons for practitioners; cost studies; syntheses of knowledge on challenging social problems; formative feedback for grantees; and practical tools. Pauly is the author of two books: The Classroom Crucible: What Really Works, What Doesn’t, and Why (1991, Basic Books) and Homegrown Lessons: Innovative Programs Linking School and Work (1995, Jossey-Bass). He also is the co-author, with Judith M. Gueron, of From Welfare to Work (published by the Russell Sage Foundation, 1991), a book on programs to help people on welfare become employed. He holds a Ph.D. from Yale in political science.
