A recently published report, The Giving Code: Silicon Valley Nonprofits and Philanthropy, uncovers disconcerting insights about the current role of philanthropy in addressing income inequality in complex regions like Silicon Valley: thus far, this new “golden age” of philanthropy seems to be mirroring income inequality, rather than solving it, with only a small portion of growing philanthropy directed to local nonprofits focused on local issues and needs. While the report’s data is focused on one region, the issues and solutions the authors explore have wider applicability in light of growing income gaps across the nation and a renewed focus on grass roots solutions. The report’s authors will present their findings and share insights from the regional and national coverage their research has sparked since the report’s release last Fall.
